Imitrex generic (sumatriptan) is the synthetic drug which you can use to treat migraine headaches, and this drug works by making the blood vessels which are located around the brain area to be narrow. It helps to reduce the substances which trigger headache pains, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound and other migraine symptoms. Doctors recommend Imitrex generic for treating already-existing migraines, and it is not recommended for preventing of migraine pain or reducing the number of attacks experienced.

You should not use Imitrex generic if you want to cure normal headache, the headache which results in stopping movement on one side of body or any other type of headache not similar to the regular migraine pain. Medical discretion is mandatory, and you should use this medication when doctor diagnoses migraine.

The drug can be used for some other health-related issues not contained in this guide.

Important information

Patients suffering from allergy or any of its ingredients (especially sumatriptan) should not use Imitrex generic. Anybody with a history of blood circulation issues, coronary heart disease, chest pain, elevated high pressure, any heart disorder, any liver disease, ischemic bowel disease and heart stroke should also not use the drug. If you experience pain not similar to the regular migraine pain, Imitrex generic should also not be used till the doctor advises to do so.

You should not take Imitrex generic for at least 24 hours before or after any other migraine drugs such as sumatriptan injection), rizatriptan (Maxalt), naratriptan (Amerge), eletriptan (Relpax), zolmitriptan (Zomig), almotriptan (Axert) or frovatriptan (Frova); and Ergot medications such as dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal), dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal)ergotamine (Cafergot, Ergomar, Migergot) and methylergonovine (Methergine).

Another important thing is that you should not use Imitrex generic with MAO inhibitors such as rasagiline (Azilect), phenelzine (Nardil), furazolidone (Furoxone), tranylcypromine (Parnate), isocarboxazid (Marplan) or selegiline (Eldepryl, Zelapar, Emsam), if you have taken MAO inhibitor in the last 2 weeks.

Before Imitrex generic is taken, you need to let the doctor know if you have a history of or are suffering from heart rhythm disorder, liver or kidney disease, coronary heart disease or blood pressure issues (or risk factors such as smoking, menopause, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, obesity, a family history of coronary heart disease, being a man of at least 40 years old and a woman with hysterectomy or a history of the condition).

You should let the doctor know if you are currently using an anti-depressant such as escitalopram (Lexapro), citalopram (Celexa), duloxetine (Cymbalta), fluvoxamine (Luvox), sertraline (Zoloft) or venlafaxine (Effexor).

After you have taken a pill of Imitrex generic, it is necessary to wait for at 120 minutes before the second pill one is taken. In 24 hours, sumatriptan tablets of 200 mg is the prescribed dosage, and if what you are using is the Imitrex generic spray, you should also wait for at least 120 minutes before you take the second spray. The prescribed application of sumatriptan nasal spray is not more than 40 mg in 24 hours. Do not increase the amount of dosage on your own. Follow prescribed schedule and dose concentrations.

Before using Imitrex generic

Do not use Imitrex generic if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients, especially sumatriptan.

Imitrex generic should not be used if you have:

  • A history of heart stroke, heart disease, or attack (including a minor attack)
  • Ischemic bowel disease
  • Serious liver disorder
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Blood circulation issues, coronary heart disease, chest pain or angina, lack of blood supply to heart
  • Headache different from the common migraine problems
  • It is not recommended to use Imitrex generic with MAO inhibitors such as rasagiline (Azilect), phenelzine (Nardil), furazolidone (Furoxone), tranylcypromine (Parnate), isocarboxazid (Marplan) or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar). This is if the MAO inhibitor was taken 2 weeks earlier.

    To prevent serious side effects, you should ask for the guidance of the doctor before the use of Imitrex generic under following conditions:

  • Epilepsy or other seizure disorder
  • Any severe liver or kidney disease
  • Coronary heart disease (or a risk factor such as smoking, menopause, diabetes, a family history of coronary heart disease, obesity, high levels of cholesterol, being a man of at least 40 years old or woman living with hysterectomy or has a history of hysterectomy)
  • High blood pressure or seizures
  • FDA pregnancy category C: Nobody knows whether Imitrex generic can harm a fetus. You should let the doctor know if you are pregnant or have plans to conceive very soon. Also, you must register your name with Imitrex generic Pregnancy Registry when you start taking this medication.

    Sumatriptan can harm a nursing baby after excreting into breast milk, and this is why the baby should not be nursed for 12 hours after taking the Imitrex generic tablet. If you use breast pump, the collected milk must be thrown away. Do not breastfeed the baby.

    You should use Imitrex generic only if you have your age between 18 and 65 years.

    The side effects of Imitrex generic

    Call for the help of the doctor if you feel ill after taking Imitrex generic. It is known that the drug causes some allergic reactions such as breathing difficulties, hives or skin rash and swelling in face, lips, throat and tongue.

    Serious Imitrex generic side effects are:

  • One-sided numbness or weakness;
  • Tingling or a pale or blue-colored appearance in your fingers or toes
  • Nausea, general ill feeling, sweating, chest pain or heavy feeling;
  • Severe headache, confusion, problems of speech, vision or balance
  • Seizures (convulsions);
  • Stomach pain and watery and bloody diarrhea;
  • If taking Imitrex generic with antidepressants, you may experience fever, hallucinations, agitation, nausea, vomiting, overactive reflexes, diarrhea, fast heart rate, fainting and loss of coordination.
  • Other common side effects are:

  • dizziness, drowsiness, spinning sensation;
  • feeling hot or cold;
  • heavy feeling or pressure in any part of your body;
  • Strange taste in your mouth after using the nasal spray;
  • mild headache but not a migraine
  • Burning, irritation or pain in the nose or throat or numbness after the use of the nasal spray;
  • warmth, mild tingling or redness, under the skin
  • nausea, vomiting, drooling;

    What happens if I miss a dose?

    You should use Imitrex generic only when needed. Therefore, skipping a dose is unlikely for you. If your pain does not improve, seek medical intervention.

    Imitrex generic does not have a daily dosing schedule because it is used when needed. Call your doctor promptly if you do not see any improvement in the symptoms after using the drug.

Some of the symptoms of overdose are vision problems, weakness, watery eyes or mouth, lack of coordination or seizure (convulsions), blue-colored lips breathing problems, tremors or shaking, or fingernails and skin redness.

    What should I avoid?

    You should not take Imitrex generic for a minimum of 24 hours after or before any other migraine drug such as sumatriptan injection, ), rizatriptan (Maxalt), eletriptan (Relpax), zolmitriptan (Zomig), naratriptan (Amerge), almotriptan (Axert), and frovatriptan (Frova); and Ergot medications such as dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal), dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal), ergotamine (Ergomar, Migergot, Cafergot) and methylergonovine (Methergine).

    Imitrex generic may affect thinking or cause reaction impairment. Care should be taken, and you should not drive or do any tedious task when taking the drug.

    How should I use Imitrex generic?

    Imitrex generic should be taken as recommended by your doctor. Do not reduce or increase dosage on your own. The directions mentioned on the label should be followed, as overdose of any migraine medication can make the headache to become worse.

    Imitrex generic should be taken as soon as you start experiencing the migraine symptoms. The doctor may first give you this medication in the hospital or clinic to ensure there are no unusual reactions.

    Sumatriptan (Imitrex generic) for Cluster Headaches: I love Imitrex generic for migraine headaches because it works instantly on cluster head pains. The Imitrex generic injections do not waste time in reacting but very painful and expensive. Nasal sprays make me to experience nausea. Great drug! Pills work wonderfully!

    Sumatriptan (Imitrex generic) for Cluster Headaches: For more than 40 ears, I suffered from miraine. But Imitrex generic freed me completely. One side effect of the drug is that it causes stomach aches. For fear of getting stomach cramps I avoid the drug sometimes.
